Where can I train MMA in Johor Bahru?
Ultimate MMA Academy (UMA) in Taman Mount Austin is Malaysia's first MMA gym, established in 2006. We teach MMA, Muay Thai, boxing, kickboxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for all levels, from total beginners to competitors.
Is there an MMA gym in JB for complete beginners?
Yes. UMA welcomes total beginners — no fitness or experience needed. Our coaches start you on the fundamentals, and many of our members had never trained before walking in. We run beginner-friendly Muay Thai, kickboxing and BJJ classes.
Where can my kid learn martial arts or self-defence in Johor Bahru?
UMA runs kids kickboxing and kids BJJ classes (ages 3+) in Mount Austin, JB — junior kickboxing and BJJ that builds confidence, focus and self-defence in a safe, supportive environment. Kids classes are RM200/month.
How much does it cost to train at UMA?
Night group classes are RM250/month (unlimited, Mon–Sat) and morning + night access is RM350/month. Kids Bully-Proof is RM200/month, adult BJJ is a separate plan at RM200/month, walk-ins are RM50/class, and 1-to-1 personal training is from RM95/session. There's a one-time lifetime registration of RM150. WhatsApp us for current promotions.
Can I try a class before committing?
Yes — walk in to any class for RM50, no membership and no commitment. Message us on WhatsApp so we know you're coming, wear comfortable workout clothes, and try the real thing first. If you join after, the RM150 registration is one-time for life.
Who is the head coach at Ultimate MMA Academy?
Melvin 'Overkill' Yeoh — a South Malaysian Muay Thai champion and ONE Championship veteran who founded UMA in 2006, Malaysia's first MMA gym. He develops fighters from the ground up and is also a full-time schoolteacher known for mentoring young people.
What martial arts can I learn at UMA in Johor Bahru?

Do I need to be fit before joining a martial arts class?
No. You don't need to be fit or have any experience to start — training itself is how you get fit. Beginners start with the fundamentals at their own pace, and the classes build your fitness, strength and confidence as you go.
Is there a women's self-defence or women-friendly class in JB?
Yes. UMA runs women's self-defence and is a welcoming, beginner-friendly environment for women in Johor Bahru — many of our members are women training for fitness, confidence and practical self-defence.
What age can kids start martial arts at UMA?
Our kids programme (junior kickboxing and BJJ) starts from age 3 — fun, structured classes that teach discipline, focus, confidence and self-defence in a safe, supportive setting.
What should I bring or wear to my first class?
Just comfortable workout clothes (a t-shirt and shorts), a water bottle and a towel. No gear needed for your first class — we'll guide you through everything. Message us before you come and we'll get you set up.
When are the class times at Ultimate MMA Academy?
Morning Muay Thai runs Monday to Friday, 10–11am. Teen & adult group classes (boxing, kickboxing, Muay Thai, self-defence, fitness — ages 13+) run 7:30–9:30pm Monday to Saturday, followed by MMA & sparring. Adult BJJ is Wednesday & Friday 8–10pm and Saturday 6–7:30pm. Kids (3+): kickboxing Saturday 6:30–7:30pm & Sunday 10–11am, kids BJJ Saturday 5–6pm & Sunday 9–10am. Personal training is available by appointment, any day. Message us to confirm timings around public holidays.
